About Formatting.tech
Formatting.tech is an independent collection of small, fast developer tools: a JSON formatter, XML and YAML formatters, a Markdown editor, encoders, decoders, converters and generators. Every one of them runs entirely in your browser.
Why this site exists
Most of us paste production data into online formatters every week: an API response that arrived minified, a Kubernetes manifest that will not parse, a JWT that needs its expiry checked. Many of the popular sites that do this send what you paste to their servers, wrap the tool in heavy pages full of ads, or hide features behind sign-ups.
Formatting.tech was started to be the opposite: tools that load quickly, stay out of the way, and process everything locally so you can safely use them with real data.
How the tools work
Each tool is plain JavaScript that runs on your device. When you click Format, Decode or Convert, the work happens inside your browser tab and the result is written straight back to the page. Large JSON files are parsed in a background Web Worker so the page stays responsive, and tree views render only the rows you can see.
You can check this yourself: open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and use any tool. No request carries the text you pasted.
What you will find here
- Formatters and validators for JSON, XML and YAML, with tree views, error line highlighting and search and replace.
- Converters between JSON, YAML, XML and CSV.
- A Markdown editor with live GitHub-style preview and HTML/PDF export.
- Encoders and decoders for Base64, URLs and JSON Web Tokens.
- Generators for UUIDs and cryptographic hashes.
- Everyday utilities such as a diff checker and an epoch timestamp converter.
Each tool page also explains the underlying format, common mistakes and how to fix them, and the blog goes deeper on topics such as JSON syntax errors and URL encoding.
How the site is funded
All tools are free, with no account and no usage limits. Hosting and development are paid for by advertising served by Google AdSense, and we use Google Analytics to understand which tools are used so we know what to improve. Both are described in the privacy policy. Ads are kept away from the editors so they never get in the way of your work.
